Post subject:  Visual novels and multiple realities

The thing about the visual novel medium that interests me the most in the way that it almost always involves representing multiple versions of reality, usually via branching caused by player choices. Moonlit Lovers is different from most in that you select a route at the start and you follow it to the end.

One of the constants, the new girl, Chitose, changes in role but not substance in the different routes. Things you learn in a route can still be considered true in the other routes even though they don't come up. (e.g. Chitose respects Forte the most, aspires to be like Milfeulle as a pilot, etc.).

I don't understand how one thing fits, though (or even if it does fit). In her own route, Chitose becomes disillusioned by the actual (weird) character of the Angel Wing. Why doesn't this happen in any other route? I think I remember a comment by Chitose that she thought they'd shape up when Tact was back in command, but that really should apply to any route since Tact isn't in command of the whole Wing in the beginning of any route.

I guess you could say she was distracted by the goings-on regarding Tact and/or his girlfriend in the other routes. She's thrilled to spend some time with Milfeulle or being trained by Forte, or embarrassed that Ranpha or Mint has mistaken her intentions toward Tact...and I honestly can't remember what she did during Vanilla's route.

Anyone want to bother to have a thought about this one?

1. Actually, the players don't choose routes, if you played the previous game, you'll see it. It just a hard thing to "import save data" between the two games so Broccoli decided to give the choice to players instead of putting all scenarios from the previous game to make it like visual novels you usually play.

2. Chitose considering herself as the junior, and therefore she thinks that she needs to know and admire her seniors unique characteristics so she can keep up with them (since those Emblem Frames power is not useful with skills only), so there will be no significant differences between routes.

3. Again, being surprised after seeing her seniors behaviors casually happens in every routes, but it only will be revealed when Chitose realized that Tact doesn't get close to one of her seniors, since girls like that will think that only his chosen angel may get to know him...

4. Oh yeah, Vanilla, who was about to enter adolescent ages probably don't know what love it is, especially if she's the modest, hardworking type. She misunderstood her own feelings, and Chitose making it worse by saying it was like "Brother-sister" relationship, instead of saying it is love.

I suspect it may have been done for practical reasons rather than story reasons. Since the first two chapters in each route are focused on some sort of personal conflict in each case, rather than on the larger storyline, it was probably necessary to create a conflict involving Chitose.

It was probably tougher to come up with a good conflict for her since she was new to the team. If they hadn't come up with a conflict, the first two chapters would have been fairly weak since the main storyline doesn't really get serious until after that point.

I have to agree with CerealGuns. Praticality is the name of the game.
If it's not practical, chances are conversations will begin between friends about the impracticality, thuroughly reducing the odds of someone buying the game.
Because it all boils down to how many copies of the game can be sold :ugeek:

As for the conflict I'll leave the fun part to everyone else.

I really enjoy how each route is completely different it was cool how they were able to tweak it to every single characters personality
