the main menu screen's title...and the movies show the ships have english writing on the sides...what gives?

Japanese people are often more skilled at the english language than most Australians, so perhaps for cosmetic reasons they used english letters rather than Kanji

Don't forget the English audio when they use their special attacks. I rather enjoy hearing them shout out the name of the attack before firing.
