Whenever I run the english patch from the game directory I get an error sayings "Unable to open archive file".

Make sure you're running the JPN Locale, instead of using AppLocale.

and make sure there aren't any japanese symbols in the path.
better change it into D:\games\kamidori or sth like that.

Start - Control Panel - Clock, Language and Region - Change Location - Click Administrative tab - Change System Locale.
